So why do standards matter?
Most often when we talk about standards, we think about international standards like ISO 9001 Quality and ISO 14001 Environmental, but a standard is simply a consistent, documented way of doing business.
The franchising industry has been using standardised business management systems for decades and there is little wonder why they are traditionally far more successful than singular businesses.
At the heart of every truly successful enterprise you will find a consistent and documented management system.
Having a consistent way of doing things across your business will have a far greater impact on your business bottom line than any other action you may take.
The International Standards
ISO 9001 Quality and ISO 14001 Environmental are internationally recognised, standardised ways of creating a documented management system.
Neither of them tell you how to structure or run your business - they are non-prescriptive. What they do provide, is a tried and tested framework within which you can create your documented, consistent management system.
They do not cost your business, in fact businesses that implement compliant management systems almost always show a marked improvement in their bottom line.
Why? Because consistency counts. You reduce waste. Your customers feel more secure in your product/service. Your staff are happier knowing what is required of them.
Other than buying a copy of the standard, there are no direct costs involved in using the standards either.
You do not need us, or any other consultant, to write or implement a management system - although hiring an experienced professional can dramatically improve the end result.
You are not required to certify your management system (unless your industry requires it - in which case you most probably already have certified), nor are there any ongoing fees or licenses.
A standards-based management system is certainly not a panacea, or some magical fast track to success, but it does make you look at your business.
And often, having a good hard look at what we do and why we do it, is the first step towards positive change.
